What if we told you your fridge might be the reason your Camel Milk isn’t reaching its use-by date? Sounds crazy right. The very thing keeping your milk fresh, is spoiling it at the same time. Well here are Five Things to make sure your Camel Milk keeps fresh.
But first, we need to take a closer look at the science of Camel Milk. As the first commercial Camel Milk dairy in Australia, QCamel has spent nearly 7 years studying the composition of our milk. We send our milk to the lab to be tested every week and consistently score the best results of any dairy product in the country! Our milk also has the longest use-by of any Camel Milk in Australia – 3 to 4 weeks once bottled.
From our years of research we’ve also found that the molecular makeup of camel milk means it responds to temperatures in a much different way. Through our testing, we’ve discovered that Camel Milk needs to be kept at a lower temperature than regular milk.
1. Make sure your fridge is set to 4 degrees Celsius.
Most fridges regulate at 5-6 degrees Celsius, which is the recommended temperature for cow milk. Camel Milk needs to be kept at 4 degrees. Just a single digit increase in temperature can reduce the use-by date of the milk.
2. Don’t keep your milk in the fridge door!
Did you know that items on the fridge door are more likely to go off? That’s because the temperature fluctuates from constantly being opened and closed. Some fridge doors even have heaters in them to stop condensation!
We kept this in mind when designing our Camel Milk bottles. QCamel milk bottles are square so you can lie them down at the back of the fridge near the cooling element and on the lower racks where its coldest.
3. Stock up and freeze it
The challenge with all fresh products is their shorter shelf life and the need to consume them quicker. So, if you buy more than one bottle at a time, why not freeze and defrost each bottle as you need it? All our bottles come with a freezer use-by-date as well as a fresh use-by-date. Don’t forget to shake each bottle to reconstitute it once it has defrosted. (A little tip: if rationing your milk, pour and freeze it as ice-cubes!)
4. Take ice-packs with you to the store.
Don’t let the trip home, the school run or a sudden traffic jam be the reason your milk goes off. The inside of your car can heat up to almost 50 degrees celsius.
5. Scoop out the cream.
Although Camel Milk is naturally low in fat, our happy camels produce very, very creamy milk. You might notice the thin layer of cream at the top of your milk bottle, which is normal for non-homogenised milk. However, cream trapped in the bottle neck can collect transfer bacteria from the lid, helping to spoil your milk. Scoop it out and use it in your tea and coffee instead!
Camel Milk needs to be kept at 4 degrees. Just a single digit increase in temperature can reduce the use-by date of the milk.
Now we know what it’s like. The kids (or man of the house) stand at the fridge door for 10 minutes
pondering what to eat, before deciding to take a swig of juice and a handful of leftovers. They don’t
notice how long they’ve been there until the fridge starts beeping and the light goes off. Later that night they make a late-night milo and leave the milk on the bench until you discover it. A week later, your milk is off.
So here’s a few ideas of what to do if your milk is spoiling.
- Put it in your scrambled eggs!
You won’t notice the difference and your eggs will be super fluffy. - Give it to your pets!
All our farm dogs, house dogs and house cats are fed on a diet of camel milk. They love it! They don’t mind if it’s fresh or a little sour. - Feed your plants!
Plants need calcium and iron to grow, and luckily camel milk is a good source of both. Our house plants are always healthy.
